Mr. Christian Day’s Computer Science Weblog

About

I have been teaching Computer Science at Emma Willard School since 2001. My focus has been on teaching AP level computer programming, but I devote time to the development and teaching of Emma Willard’s other computer science courses as well. I have a B.A. in Computer Science from Manhattanville College, and a M.S. in Computer Science from Brandeis University.
After receiving my M.S., I went to work for JYACC, Inc. – now known as Prolifics, Inc. – in New York City. While in New York I married Carmel Schettino, and while in New York witnessed the first terrorist attack on the Twin Towers. After 3 years in New York and a year in Prolifcs’ Wellesley, MA office, I took the job of Computer Science Instructor at Phillips Exeter Academy, where I taught for 6 years. In 2001, I left my tenured position for the Computer Science position at the Emma Willard School where I could work part time and take care of my two children. In 2002, I began full-time work at Emma Willard and took over chairmanship of the department.
Christian is fairly active in Computer Science Education for women. The Essential Issues for Women in the
Technology Age
course grew from my growing interest in how girls learn Computer Programming, and substantially from Jane Margolis and Allen Fisher’s book “Unlocking the Clubhouse,” published by MIT press.
Interests:I am very interested in politics, and let the following sources guide me through these troubled times:

On a lighter note, I am also an active Mountain Biker with the Mohawk/Hudson Valley Cycling Club, an avid fan of the New England Patriots, I play the trumpet [1 | 2], and love being around my kids.

2005 racing Racing this summer was a bust. I once again raced the Masters of the Mountains race series, but suffered from a pair of mechanical failures. I didn’t finish the 1st or 3rd races, and placed poorly in the middle race.
2006 racing The most disappointing thing about this season is that I was feeling great, rode a lot of miles (about 1000 on the road and a lot on the trails) and got clobbered in every race I entered. I am pleased that I finished each race, but would like to be more competitive.April, 2006 (burr) Johnny Cake Road Race Series race #1
